Meeting Recap for September 26, 2012

Think quick, but you don’t need to respond!  Did anyone have any fun at today’s meeting?  Did you learn anything?  I think the answer is “Yes” to both of those questions thanks to our Toastmaster, Darrell V, who picked today’s theme of “Think & Respond”.  I think the Toastmaster also roped Darrell into being our Grammarian!

UkraineWe got to hear from our local Ukrainian today, Oleg S, who gave us the lowdown on Ukraine with his speech titled, “Hidden Facts About Ukraine”.  This was Oleg’s second speech in the Competent Communicator manual, Organize Your Speech, and he did a great job!
Our second speaker, Craig M, says, “I struggled once again, but hey, that’s why we’re here!”  He was doing project #3 from the advanced Specialty Speeches Manual, Sell a Product, where he tried to persuade us to buy an iPhone 5.
Oleg captured the “Best Speaker-of-the-Day” award with his nice speech about Ukraine!

Scott P, our VP of Education, conducted Table Topics today and had some very interesting questions.  He first asked Darius O to tell him what is the worst piece of clothing someone can wear & why?  For some reason I’ve got visions of this person in a martian suit going to a cocktail dinner that I can’t get out of my head!  He then asked Rich S that if he were invisible, where would he go?  Naturally Rich’s first instinct was to go find out what the heck the government is up to by listening in on them to make sure they are telling us the truth – that’ll be the day!  We were running a little behind and so we didn’t have time for any more good questions and responses, but Darius captured the “Best Table Topic Response” award of the day!

Cheryl E was today’s General Evaluator and did an excellent job in this role!  We then got to hear our president, Kevin M, evaluate Oleg’s speech and he did a great job, especially as he was filling in at the last moment!  Lorianne O then evaluated your editor’s speech and proceeded to put him in his place and I truly did appreciate her pointing out the good, bad and ugly of my speech!  In fact, it was such a great evaluation that Lorianne was awarded today’s “Best Evaluator Award” for her effort!

lightbulbReminder/Teaching Moment of the Week:

  • If something’s come up and you can’t fill a role, be sure and let the Toastmaster know ASAP so he/she can find a replacement – assuming, of course, you have been unsuccessful in finding one yourself.
  • Remember to bring your Competent Leadership manual every week so you can get credit toward your CL Award whenever you fill a role and it might be at the “last minute”.

We really appreciate the great job everyone did today in making the meeting so enjoyable!

See you all next week!

Meeting Recap for September 19, 2012

Ahoy there, MeBuckos!  We had a fun meeting today with our Toastmaster, Scott P, putting us in a “piraty” type mood with a theme of “Speak Like a Pirate Day”.

Blue Beard the PirateI believe we had our first-ever meeting where two sisters “me beauties” spoke on the same day!  Sister #1, Kathy D, talked to us about how smart her children are, and why they’re so much smarter than ours!  Not to be outdone, sister #2, Ellen C, gave on off-manual speech titled:  “Lessons I Learned From My Father”, that garnered her the “Speaker-of-the-Week” award!  They were both great and we appreciate being there to hear both of them!

Jared S was our Table Topics Master, and he gave each of the volunteers some good questions that weren’t impossible to answer.  We heard from Cheryl E; Jennifer S (welcome back!!); a guest, Marshall Hand Craig M.  Marshall’s response to what’s good and bad about Utah winters, captured the best Table Topic response of the day award!

Melissa B was our General Evaluator, and she was doing this role for the first time and did a good job!  We got to hear Liz M evaluate Kathy’s speech and Darius O evaluated Ellen’s presentation.  Both evaluations were great, but Darius walked away with the evaluator ribbon for his great job!

lightbulbReminder/Teaching Moment of the Week:

  • If you know in advance that you won’t be attending on a given week, be sure and give the VP of Education as much notification as possible – Scott this year!
  • Be sure and check the schedule early so you are not surprised what role you need to fulfill!

We really appreciate the great job everyone did today in making the meeting so enjoyable!

See you all next week!

Meeting Recap for September 12, 2012

When it rains, it pours!  A great meeting despite having a few torrent like issues at the start!  We had the privilege of hearing two great speeches today which is always nice!

Scott P started us off with reminiscing about the past and talking about speeches and events that took place in the club in the past and then proposed a toast to the Salt Lake Hardware Club members complete with non-alcoholic bubbly!

Darrell V then gave us his “After Dinner Speech”, which is the 5th and final speech in the Entertaining Speaker series, titled “Changing the Rules of Golf”.   Darrell was awarded the “Speaker-of-the-Week” award with his great speech and this presentation gave him the 10 needed speeches beyond his Competent Communicator to earn his Advanced Communicator Bronze award!  Congratulations, Darrell!

Our president, Kevin M was today’s Table Topics Master.  He gave Candice CKim I and Craig M some interesting “rain” questions to answer with Candice capturing the best Table Topic response of the day award with her Crown Burger in the rain retort!

Our General Evaluator was Lorianne O who always does a great job no matter what assignment she is given.  She introduced us to Ellen C to evaluate Scott’s speech.
Dave S then had the privilege of evaluating Darrell’s speech and both of them did an outstanding job with Ellen capturing the best evaluator-of-the-week award with her review!

lightbulbReminder/Teaching Moment of the Week
(don’t anyone take this personal!)

  • It is the Toastmaster’s responsibility to print the agendas (or get someone to print them!)
  • It is the Grammarian’s responsibility to bring us a word-of-the-day!

We really appreciate the great job everyone did today in making the meeting so enjoyable!  We’d also like to thank everyone that filled some very important roles today without much notice!

See you all next week!
